In an effort to expand my knowledge of ceramic practices, I have signed up for several soda firings at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. I believe from the beginning of my ceramics career I have been making vessels suited to these reduction atmospheres, and I am so excited to finally expand my practice to include them more regularly.
Having already completed one I have to say I am seeing my work in a whole new light. The subtile details that I so love in a freshly thrown form are no longer lost after the bisque, but accentuated by the licking flame and falling soda. I feel my works come even more alive, when the faceted movements of the form aren't weighed down by heavy glazes, but rather kissed by swirling soda within the kiln.
